The Department of Music at Nwafor Orizu College of Education, Nsugbe (NOCEN) — a vibrant and creative academic hub where talent meets training, and passion transforms into professional skill.

Who We Are

We are the rhythmic heartbeat of NOCEN — a department where music is not just taught but lived, experienced, and celebrated. Our department blends academic rigor with artistic expression, nurturing aspiring musicians, performers, composers, and music educators for excellence in Nigeria’s cultural and educational sectors.

What We Do

At the Department of Music, we provide students with a comprehensive education in both the theoretical and practical aspects of music. Our curriculum covers:

Music Theory and Composition
Musicianship and Aural Training
Music History and Appreciation
African and Western Music Traditions
Vocal and Instrumental Performance
Music Technology and Studio Practice
Classroom Music Methods (Music Education)

Our programme equips students with the skills to teach music in primary and secondary schools, conduct choirs, compose original works, and participate in live performances with confidence and creativity.

Our Facilities

We are housed in a well-equipped music studio and rehearsal rooms, furnished with a wide range of musical instruments such as:

Piano, keyboard, and organ
Drum sets and African percussion
String, brass, and woodwind instruments
Audio recording and playback equipment
Music library and notation materials

These resources help our students learn in a practical, hands-on environment, preparing them for both classroom and stage performance.

Beyond the Classroom

Music at NOCEN goes beyond theory — it’s a lifestyle. Our students participate in:

Live performances and concerts
Choral competitions and festivals
Cultural and intercollegiate events
Music workshops and exhibitions
Community outreach through music education and entertainment

These activities help our students develop confidence, stage presence, and professional exposure early in their careers.
