BRITISH COUNCIL LOCAL CONSULTANT VISITS NWAFOR ORIZU COLLEGE OF EDUCATION, NSUGBE
A British Council Local Consultant on Wednesday, 19th November 2025, visited Nwafor Orizu College of Education, Nsugbe, as part of an ongoing effort to assess the impact of the British Council STEP (Supporting Teachers’ English Proficiency) course training across the six geo-political zones of Nigeria.
Nwafor Orizu College of Education, Nsugbe, was specially selected to represent all federal, state and private colleges of education across the five states of South-East Nigeria in the British Council training and assessment exercises. The choice underscores the College’s strategic role in teacher education within the region.
During the visit, the Consultant held discussions with a 12-member Focus Group Discussion (FGD) team drawn from the pre-service teachers trained in the College for south-east region. The session focused on evaluating how the STEP training influences teaching practices, professional development, and overall teacher competence among the pre-service teachers and within the College.
The Local Consultant also interacted with the British Council course facilitators working in the College, as well as the Provost, to gather broader institutional perspectives on the programme’s effectiveness. The British Council facilitators for south-east include the Provost, Dr Justina Anyadigwu, Dr Ifeanyi Nzekwu, Dr Nonye Osuchukwu and Dr Wilson Igboasi.
According to the Consultant, the aim of the assessment is to strengthen and enhance teacher education in the South-East and Nigeria at large. The visit is expected to contribute to future improvements in the delivery and impact of the STEP programme nationwide.
