GUNMEN ASSASSINATE CATHOLIC PRIEST ON ENUGU RURAL HIGHWAY

Fear gripped communities in Nsukka Local Government Area of Enugu State on Friday evening after armed men gunned down a Catholic priest on the Eha-Alumona–Eha-Ndiagu Road.

Rev. Fr. Matthew Eya, shepherd of St. Charles Catholic Church, Eha-Ndiagu, was on his way home when the attackers struck.

Witnesses say the gunmen, riding on motorcycles, ambushed his car on the lonely stretch, disabling it before unleashing a hail of bullets that ended his life on the spot.

In a Saturday statement, the Catholic Diocese of Nsukka said it was devastated by the “senseless” murder of Fr. Eya, calling him a tireless pastor whose absence would leave a painful void in the parish.

The Church urged security operatives to waste no time in tracking down and prosecuting his killers.

The incident has sent waves of panic across the area, with residents lamenting worsening insecurity on Enugu’s rural roads and calling for urgent government intervention to forestall further bloodshed.
