UNN SHUTS DOWN NIGHT EVENTS AFTER BONFIRE TURNS DEADLY
The University of Nigeria, Nsukka (UNN) has slammed a dusk-to-dawn restriction on all social gatherings across its campus, a swift reaction to the shocking death of a well-known businessman during a departmental bonfire.
The victim, identified as Chiebonam Nweze, popularly called Power-Autos, was attending a September 12 celebration organised by the Department of Archaeology and Heritage Studies when chaos erupted.
Eyewitnesses said intruders from nearby communities sneaked into the venue, sparking a confrontation that ended in a fatal stabbing.
UNN’s management described the curfew as a “necessary safety measure” and vowed to beef up security and screen non-students at future events.
Security agencies are already investigating the killing and have promised to bring all suspects to justice.
While some students welcome the move as a long-overdue step to protect lives, others fear that night-time restrictions will dampen campus vibrancy. Community leaders around Nsukka have also called for a stronger police presence to prevent a repeat of such tragedy.
