ENUGU SHINES BRIGHT, EARNS 100M AS NIGERIA’S CLEANEST STATE
Enugu State has taken the spotlight as Nigeria’s cleanest and greenest state, proudly walking away with a ₦100 million prize in the Renewed Hope Initiative (RHI) Green Nigeria Challenge.
At a colorful ceremony inside the Presidential Villa, Abuja, the nation’s First Lady, Senator Oluremi Tinubu, handed the award to Enugu’s own First Lady, Mrs. Nkechinyere Mbah, applauding the state for turning cleanliness into a culture.
Unlike many competitions judged on promises, the Green Nigeria Challenge set its standards high—tree planting, neat streets, and swift response to waste. Enugu ticked every box.
From the well-kept major roads to inner streets where litter hardly lingers, the state’s commitment to hygiene stood out as a model for the rest of the nation.
Senator Tinubu praised Enugu’s resilience, noting how quickly waste gets cleared whenever it appears, and described the state as a shining example of what’s possible when leaders and citizens take ownership of their environment.
In her acceptance remarks, Mrs. Mbah thanked her husband, Governor Peter Mbah, the Enugu State Waste Management Authority (ESWAMA), and local government councils for keeping the vision alive.
She pledged that Enugu would not only maintain the standard but push even further to remain the nation’s benchmark for environmental sanity.
With the 100 million prize in hand, Enugu’s victory goes beyond prestige — it reinforces the city’s growing image as a hub of progress, health, and green innovation.
