EERC SLAMS MAINPOWER FOR DEFYING TARIFF ORDER, URGES CUSTOMERS TO REPORT OVERBILLING
MainPower Electricity Distribution Company Limited has come under fire from the Enugu State Electricity Regulatory Commission (EERC) for allegedly breaching its approved tariff order.
According to a public notice, the regulator discovered that the company reverted to charging 209.50/kWh for Band A customers, instead of the 160.40/kWh rate earlier fixed by the commission.
EERC described the act as “a violation of the Tariff Order,” stressing that the disobedience continued despite previous directives mandating strict compliance.
The commission advised customers to be alert and report any case of overbilling. It urged Band A consumers who received charges above the approved rate to submit evidence of the discrepancy for regulatory action, warning that sanctions may be imposed on MainPower.
However, MainPower has not backed down. In a petition dated August 14, 2025, the company rejected the tariff reduction order, which took effect on August 1, 2025, insisting that it would not accept the downward review from 209.50/kWh to 160.40/kWh.
This face-off now places electricity consumers in Enugu State at the center of a growing conflict between the regulator and the distribution company.
