HOPE AND HUSTLE: NSUKKA GEARS UP FOR A MEGA ECONOMIC MAKEOVER

On Saturday, the historic streets of Nsukka pulsed with excitement. Traders, community leaders, and residents gathered in anticipation — not just for another political speech, but for a promise of transformation.

That promise came in the form of a 5,000-shop Nsukka International Market, unveiled by Enugu State Governor, Dr. Peter Mbah.

With construction now underway, Mbah assured that the new market is more than bricks and mortar — it’s a commitment to inclusive development, where no one displaced by progress is left behind.

Dismissing claims that the project targeted former Ogige Market traders, the Governor called such allegations “false stories spun by enemies of progress.”

He explained that his leadership style focuses on spreading growth evenly, noting that similar relocations had taken place in Ogbete Holy Ghost, Abakpa Nike, and Gariki to pave the way for modern transport terminals.

“This is beyond just breaking ground,” he said with emotion. “We are transforming Nsukka for the greater good. This is not about politics — it’s about public interest and a vision to modernize our transportation network with world-class terminals.”

Mbah set an ambitious deadline end of 2025 for the project’s completion. He also gave a firm pledge: traders affected by the Ogige Market relocation will get the first pick of the new shops, with the first batch ready within four months.

For Nsukka, the launch was more than an infrastructural milestone — it was a glimpse into a future of economic revival. Council Chairman, Engr. Jude Asogwa, hailed the initiative, saying it would “bring huge relief, unlock opportunities, and boost prosperity for Nsukka and the entire Enugu North Zone.”
