A disturbing tale of abuse of power and manipulation of Nigeria’s justice system is unfolding, following the controversial arrest and secret detention of a young Nigerian TikToker, Timothy Gabriel, allegedly over a social media post about Nollywood actress and Ned Nwoko’s wife, Regina Daniels.

Human rights advocate and former presidential candidate has raised alarm, accusing APC Senator Prince Ned Nwoko of orchestrating Gabriel’s detention in Keffi Correctional Center through backdoor influence and judicial complicity.

According to eyewitness reports, on Wednesday, June 18, events took a shocking turn at Wuse Zone 6 Magistrate Court, Abuja.

The TikToker was expected to be arraigned, but instead, the prosecution stealthily obtained a 14-day detention order late in the evening — even though his lawyer, Barr. AK Musa, had been present at the court hours earlier, waiting for formal charges.

“This wasn’t a rape case. This was about a young man who offended a powerful man’s wife online.

The Magistrate admitted they routinely issue detention orders even for cases outside their jurisdiction,” said the activist, who joined the protest that erupted outside the court premises.

Efforts by Gabriel’s legal team to prevent his transfer to prison were met with legal gymnastics.

The prosecutor, under pressure, returned Gabriel to the FCT Scorpion Command (Abattoir Police Station) instead of proceeding with the unlawful transfer.

Things became more bizarre the next day, June 19, when the same prosecutor suddenly withdrew from a separate trial involving the activist, citing illness — a “running stomach” raising questions about the credibility of the legal process.

Allegations have since surfaced that Ned Nwoko, through connections in the Nigeria Police Force and the FCT judiciary, has submitted lists of individuals he wants jailed before trial, including Gabriel.

These claims were reportedly corroborated by unnamed officials from the Ministry of Justice.

“This is a classic example of how power is weaponized in Nigeria. Timothy Gabriel may end up in one of the most notorious prisons in the country, not for any crime, but for stepping on the toes of someone married to privilege,” the source added.

As the case garners national attention, it has once again highlighted Nigeria’s justice system’s vulnerability to political and personal interference.
