THE UPCOMING NATIONWIDE PROTEST MAY LIKELY LEAD TO ANARCHY -NIGERIAN MILITARY

Based on a scenario study by the military high command, the Defence Headquarters (DHQ) states that the planned statewide protest has the potential to turn into a reign of terror and disorder.

Edward Buba, the Director of Defence Media activities, made this statement on Thursday in Abuja during a briefing for media about military activities.

Major General Buba stated that the military had looked into a number of issues, including whether or not opposition politics, independent parties, sovereign meddling, terrorist organisations, or other causes were driving the planned protest.

The armed forces’ missions and responsibilities are also spelt out in detail in the constitution.

However, while peaceful protest is guaranteed by the constitution, citizens do not have the right to organise for chaos with the intention of committing acts of terror.

The scheduled demonstration is taking place in the backdrop of recent, violent, and unresolved events in Kenya. “Considering the circumstances, there are already signs that dishonest people are determined to use the scheduled protest as a platform for violent protests,” he stated.

According to Mr. Buba, there have been indications of status-related violence, whereby individuals possessing even the most basic items—such as vehicles and cellphones—have become targets, along with shop owners and homeowners.

He claims that people from different ethnic groups, members of rival political parties, places of worship, companies, and marketplaces are among the other possible targets. According to what he indicated above, the level of violence that is anticipated is best characterised as anarchy.

“The military forces will not stand by and watch while the country descends to such dangerous heights due to this reason.

The military has essentially been involved in conflicts and seen conditions of chaos in war-torn nations, especially during ECOMOG or peacekeeping missions.

“The troops will take appropriate action to prevent such despicable incidents from occurring in our country because of this,” he continued.
