Hi , welcome to;
This is a standard and specialist Hospital located in Nnewi, Anambra state, owned by the Nnewi Diocese Of The Anglican Communion.
*History of Nnewi Diocesan Hospital Otolo Nnewi*
Church Missionary Society’s (CMS) Niger medical mission at Ozalla, Onitsha, where the Mission carried on the ministry of healing through tending the sick, the suffering and the dying .
Establishment of village maternity homes which eventually developed into the Niger Diocesan Maternity service (DMS)
Due to proximity and need to reach other communities that are far from Iyienu Mission Hospital which was established in 1908, another center was established in Nnewi axis in 1931and was later changed to Niger Diocesan Hospital Nnewi.
This hospital was sustained by weekly coverage of the Niger
Traveling-doctor.
The then Niger Diocesan hospital Nnewi which was established in 1931 was operated on CMS format of self-sustaining, self-reliant and self -propagating.
The location of the hospital has been at the compound believed to be former sacrilegious forest that was given to the Church Missionary Society called ‘Akwudo,’ close to st Thomas Otolo Nnewi
By 1980s, Dr. Philips, the Director of Diocesan medical services advised the Board to appoint Dr T. B Tailor as the Medical Superintendent of the then Niger Diocesan Hospital Nnewi and whose tenor extended till the end of 1989.
Among the members of the Board then were Dr. Obi Ifezurike as the Chairman and then Ven C. U Okpala who was then Archdeacon of Nnewi Archdeaconry.
From the few available records, the hospital had its own share of mismanagement, negligence and lack of duty of care.
By then sustentation funds and grants from the Churchs in the then Nnewi Archdeaconry were directed to the hospital for its operations.
In 1990s, Dr Nkemdilim who was employed in 1989 was appointed as the medical superintendent of the hospital. He supervised the establishment of the mortuary department in the hospital which was run on contract basis.
.
Following the creation of the Diocese of Nnewi in 1996, the name of the Hospital was changed to Nnewi Diocesan Hospital Otolo Nnewi and then Ven G. I Okpala became the Diocesan Bishop of Nnewi and the proprietor of the Hospital.
Moreso the chief executive post in the hospital was directed to those who are not Medical Doctors in order to ensure effective management of the system.
Among these who have served as the Hospital Administrator s in the hospital were
Ven. Dr Morris Agu,
Ven Emeka Igwilo, Ven Kenechukwu Isaiah Obi and presently, Rev Canon Tochukwu Okwuchukwu.
Based on the retirement of the most Rev Dr GIN Okpala as the Diocesan Bishop in 2019,
Rt. Rev Ndubisi Obi, a visionary leader took the bull by the horn by ensuring that the hospital is well equipped.
