SOLUDO PROHIBITS CHRISTMAS AND GRADUATION PARTIES, WRITING IN TEXTBOOKS IN ANAMBRA SCHOOLS

Governor Chukwuma Charles Soludo of Anambra State has placed a ban on Christmas parties, graduation ceremonies, and the practice of students writing inside textbooks in all schools across the state.

The new directive, conveyed by the Commissioner for Education, Prof. Ngozi Chuma-Udeh, is part of the government’s effort to ease the financial pressure on parents and promote a more disciplined learning environment.

Prof. Chuma-Udeh explained that schools are no longer permitted to organize events such as Christmas celebrations or graduation parties that demand contributions or special attire from parents.

She described such activities as exploitative and unnecessary, emphasizing that the focus should return to education rather than luxury or pageantry.

“Our schools should not be avenues for exploiting parents. We must redirect attention to learning and academic development,” she stated.

The state government also directed teachers to stop giving assignments that require students to write directly in textbooks, saying the measure will make learning materials reusable and help families save costs.

“A textbook is meant to be used by more than one child. Writing in them renders them useless for others and increases the financial load on families,” the Commissioner noted.

The Soludo administration warned that any school found disregarding these new rules could face sanctions, including closure.

While many parents have applauded the move as a timely step to ease economic hardship, others believe that completely abolishing Christmas and graduation ceremonies could dampen student motivation and strip schools of cultural and emotional experiences.

Education officials have, however, assured that the government will monitor compliance closely across all local government areas in the state.
