TINUBU CONFIRMS YAKUBU’S EXIT, APPOINTS AGBAMUCHE-MBU AS ACTING INEC CHAIR AHEAD OF ANAMBRA ELECTION
President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has confirmed the departure of Prof. Mahmood Yakubu as Chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), officially marking the end of his nearly ten-year tenure at the electoral body.
Yakubu, who presided over two general elections and several state polls, was praised by President Tinubu for his contributions to the growth of Nigeria’s democracy.
In recognition of his service, the President conferred a national honour on the outgoing INEC chief for introducing innovations such as the BVAS and IReV systems that modernized Nigeria’s electoral process.
To ensure a smooth leadership transition, May Agbamuche-Mbu, the most senior National Commissioner, has been appointed as Acting Chairman of INEC.
She is expected to oversee operations and preparations for the upcoming Anambra governorship election, ensuring stability within the commission until a substantive chair is named and confirmed by the Senate.
While reports suggest the Presidency is considering several candidates for Yakubu’s permanent replacement, no official announcement has yet been made.
