SOLUDO ORDERS END TO LEVY COLLECTION FROM SMALL TRADERS IN ANAMBRA
Governor Chukwuma Charles Soludo has cautioned revenue agents and market officials in Anambra State against imposing any form of taxes or levies on petty traders and low-income earners.
During an unscheduled visit to Eke Market, Awgbu, in Orumba North Local Government Area, the governor condemned the continued extortion of traders despite an existing government ban on such collections.
“Stop collecting money from petty traders immediately. Anyone who disobeys this order will be arrested,” Soludo declared. “No trader with goods valued below ₦100,000 should pay any tax or fee.”
The governor reiterated that his administration had previously scrapped all charges for hawkers, barrow pushers, vulcanizers, and other small-scale workers, noting that the decision aligns with his policy to ease the financial burdens on struggling citizens.
According to Soludo, the reformed tax policy aims to safeguard the interests of small business owners who form a vital part of the state’s informal economy.
He urged market associations and local councils to enforce the directive strictly and warned against any form of exploitation of the poor.
“Our goal is to build a fair and prosperous Anambra where government policies uplift, not oppress, the people,” the governor stated.
