FROM 8TH TO 34TH: ANAMBRA SLAMS CONTROVERSIAL STATE PERFORMANCE INDEX
The Anambra State Government has vehemently pushed back against the 2025 edition of the PCL State Performance Index, which controversially placed the state in Nigeria’s “underperforming” category and among the least desirable places to live.
In the new ranking, Anambra tumbled dramatically from 8th position in 2024 to 34th this year — a drop that has ignited a storm of debate across the political space.
State officials have branded the report “misleading and disconnected from reality,” insisting it ignores the state’s bold investments in infrastructure, health care, education, security, and digital governance reforms.
They argue that far from declining, Anambra is undergoing “its most ambitious transformation in decades,” with ongoing projects aimed at repositioning it as an economic hub in the South-East.
The government’s rejection of the index has split public opinion. Supporters say the ranking fails to capture the palpable changes on the ground, while critics insist the state still battles deep-rooted governance and social challenges.
The controversy has now sparked a wider national conversation about the credibility of performance indexes and their real impact on policy.
