TRAGEDY IN ONITSHA AS OCHA BRIGADE SHOOTING CLAIMS LIFE, LEAVES SEVEN INJURED
What began as a regular enforcement exercise at the bustling Onitsha Main Market on Tuesday, September 9, 2025, turned into a scene of panic and bloodshed when operatives of the Operation Clean and Healthy Anambra (OCHA) Brigade allegedly opened fire on traders.
The incident, which occurred around Emeka Offor Plaza, sent shockwaves across the city.
22-year-old Chinwe Igwe was confirmed dead at the hospital, while seven others sustained gunshot injuries and are currently receiving treatment.
Eyewitnesses recounted that the operatives stormed the market to dismantle roadside stalls, but a heated confrontation with traders escalated into chaos.
Instead of restraint, the officers reportedly discharged live bullets, causing pandemonium as traders and shoppers fled in terror.
Although some early reports suggested multiple deaths—including that of a pregnant woman—the Anambra State Police Command confirmed that only one person died while seven were injured.
Governor Chukwuma Soludo has since condemned the incident, ordering the immediate arrest of the operatives involved. The OCHA Brigade leadership also distanced itself from the action, insisting the operation was unauthorized.
The detained officers have been handed over to security agencies for investigation.
While normalcy has gradually returned to the market following heavy police deployment, public anger remains high, with community leaders and rights groups demanding justice and a thorough review of how enforcement agencies operate in Anambra.
