ENUGU GOVERNMENT EMPOWERS 60,000 FARMERS WITH FREE FERTILISERS AND MODERN INPUTS TO BOOST FOOD PRODUCTION
In a bold step to strengthen food security and rural prosperity, Governor Peter Ndubuisi Mbah of Enugu State has officially flagged off the distribution of over 40,000 bags of fertiliser and other agro-inputs to more than 60,000 registered farmers across the state.
The event, held on Saturday, August 30, 2025, at Michael Okpara Square, Enugu, marked the continuation of the administration’s agricultural transformation programme, aimed at repositioning Enugu from a consumer state to a major producer of food and agro-products.
DIRECT SUPPORT TO FARMERS
Unlike previous interventions bogged down by bureaucracy, this initiative provides farmers with direct access to inputs without intermediaries. Beneficiaries will receive not only fertilisers but also cassava stems, seedlings, pesticides, herbicides, and mechanised farming tools, all free of charge.
Governor Mbah, addressing a large crowd of farmers and stakeholders, described agriculture as the lifeline of Enugu’s economy.
“Farmers are the backbone of our communities. Without them, there is no sustenance, no prosperity, and no growth. This programme is not just about giving fertilisers—it is about securing our future and making Enugu the food basket of the South East,” he said.
AGRICULTURAL REVOLUTION IN MOTION
The scheme builds on similar efforts rolled out in 2024, where 12,000 bags of fertiliser and farm tools were distributed, leading to bumper harvests and lower food prices across the state.
Beyond input distribution, the Mbah administration is investing heavily in agricultural infrastructure:
Farm Estates: 200-hectare farms are being developed in each of Enugu’s 260 wards, complete with irrigation systems, warehouses, and tractor sheds.
Mechanisation: 102 tractors have already been delivered, another 98 are on the way, and a local tractor assembly plant—capable of producing 800 units—is nearing completion.
Education & Research: Enugu State Polytechnic, Iwollo, is being upgraded to a University of Agriculture to train the next generation of agricultural innovators.
Agro-Industrial Development: Plans are underway for Agro-Processing Zones and Agricultural Transformation Centres to boost value addition and reduce post-harvest losses.
