FROM PITCH TO ETERNITY: ENUGU GOVERNOR TO IMMORTALISE CHRISTIAN CHUKWU
Enugu State Governor, Dr. Peter Mbah, has vowed to eternally honour the late Nigerian football legend, Christian “Chairman” Chukwu, describing him as not just a football star but a unifying force whose impact transcended sports and touched the very soul of the nation.
At a Night of Tributes held on Wednesday at the Enugu International Conference Centre, Governor Mbah announced that Rangers International FC’s legendary Number 5 jersey—the iconic shirt worn by Chukwu throughout his career—would be permanently retired as a mark of immortal respect.
His words drew thunderous applause:
“Chairman’s legacy cannot fade. The Number 5 jersey he wore will remain untouchable, reserved forever as a symbol of his greatness.”
In addition, Mbah disclosed that the Enugu State Government would take full responsibility for the welfare of 109 ex-Rangers players, while also partnering with the Federal Government to ensure that Chukwu’s remarkable story is carved into Nigeria’s sporting history.
The governor, visibly moved, described Chukwu’s death as a national loss:
“When I learned of his passing, it felt like a part of our collective spirit had departed. He was more than a captain, more than a defender—he was a beacon of unity, dignity, and pride for our people.”
Christian Chukwu, fondly known as “Chairman,” captained Nigeria’s victorious 1980 AFCON squad and stood as a towering figure in African football. Governor Mbah stressed that his legacy will live on, inspiring generations long after the echoes of the stadium fade.
