PREGNANT TEENS RESCUED AS AUTHORITIES RAID BABY HARVESTING CENTRE IN UMUNYA
Authorities in Anambra State have dismantled a suspected baby trafficking ring camouflaged as a maternity facility in Umunya, close to Tansian University in Oyi Local Government Area.
The operation, spearheaded by the State Ministry of Health and security operatives, uncovered a disturbing scene where young pregnant girls were allegedly held and exploited.
A CLINIC IN NAME, A CRIME HUB IN REALITY
The centre presented itself as a health clinic but was in fact an unregistered and unregulated facility used to harbor vulnerable girls, most of them teenagers.
During the sting operation, five pregnant teenagers were rescued, and at least ten other individuals, including fake medical staff and suspected operators, were apprehended.
Investigations revealed that the girls were lured with promises of care and compensation. In exchange, they were expected to surrender their newborns, who would be sold illegally. The so-called clinic lacked professional staff or legal backing and was completely unknown to state medical authorities.
GOVERNMENT’S RESPONSE: NO ROOM FOR BABY HARVESTERS
Anambra State Commissioner for Health, Dr. Afam Obidike, condemned the incident, describing it as a gross violation of human rights and medical ethics. He confirmed that the facility was neither registered nor certified to operate and promised justice for the victims.
“The young girls are now safe and receiving both medical care and psychological support,” Dr. Obidike said. He further assured the public that legal action is already underway against the operators of the illegal centre.
A CALL FOR VIGILANCE AND JUSTICE
This shocking discovery highlights the persistent threat of child exploitation and baby harvesting in some Nigerian communities. The Anambra State Government has vowed to tighten surveillance on health facilities, raise public awareness, and enforce stricter penalties against anyone found guilty of trafficking or medical fraud.
Residents are urged to report suspicious clinics or unusual health practices, especially in rural or semi-urban areas, to help authorities curb such criminal activities.
