NIGERIA WINS LEGAL BATTLE IN UK OVER $11 BILLION ARBITRATION WITH P&ID

Nigeria has secured a groundbreaking legal victory in a long-standing case involving a failed gas deal with Process & Industrial Developments Ltd. (P&ID). The case, which spanned over a decade, revolved around a controversial 2010 gas supply and processing agreement in which P&ID was awarded a staggering $11 billion in damages through international arbitration.

The Nigerian government contested the award, alleging that the deal was fraudulent and that the arbitration process itself was tainted with corruption and misconduct. In 2023, the UK High Court found in Nigeria’s favor, and now in 2025, the UK Court of Appeal has upheld that ruling, permanently nullifying the award.

Impact:

The annulled judgment saved Nigeria from a financial burden equivalent to one-third of its national budget.

The court condemned the arbitration as “tainted by bribery, perjury, and dishonesty at the highest level.”

President Tinubu’s administration has praised the verdict as a turning point in restoring Nigeria’s international reputation and deterring future exploitative contracts.
