SERAP URGES MARK ZUCKERBERG, META TO PAY $220 MILLION FINE AND COMPENSATE NIGERIAN VICTIMS

.

The Socio-Economic Rights and Accountability Project (SERAP) has called on Mark Zuckerberg, Chairman and CEO of Meta Platforms, Inc. (Facebook), to immediately comply with the $220 million fine levied by Nigeria’s Federal Competition and Consumer Protection Commission (FCCPC) — a penalty recently upheld by the Competition and Consumer Protection Tribunal.

.

In an open letter, SERAP also demanded that Meta not only pay the fine but provide full justice and effective remedies for Nigerians whose consumer rights, data privacy, and protection laws — as well as international human rights standards — were violated.

.

SERAP DEMANDS FURTHER COMPENSATION, ACCOUNTABILITY

Beyond the initial fine, SERAP is urging Mr. Zuckerberg and Meta to also promptly settle the $35,000 cost awarded by the Tribunal to the FCCPC for investigation expenses.

SERAP pressed Meta to immediately cease the unlawful practices identified by the Tribunal, prevent any future occurrences, and hold accountable those responsible for these serious breaches.

.

TRIBUNAL CONFIRMS META’S VIOLATIONS IN NIGERIA

Last Friday, the Tribunal firmly upheld the FCCPC’s $220 million sanction, confirming that Meta’s operations in Nigeria had severely infringed on citizens’ human rights, particularly relating to consumer protections, data privacy, and the free enjoyment of digital platforms.

“The Tribunal’s findings reveal ongoing and potentially recurring human rights abuses if prompt and effective actions are not taken,” SERAP stated in the letter.

.

WARNING AGAINST APPEALS AND FURTHER HARM

SERAP cautioned Mr. Zuckerberg against attempting to appeal the Tribunal’s ruling under Section 55 of the FCCP Act, emphasizing that any delays in compliance would unnecessarily prolong the suffering of victims.

.

The organization urged Meta to act without hesitation, stressing that measures should be implemented within seven days of the receipt or publication of the letter to avoid further legal or reputational consequences.
