BROKEN PROMISES: TINUBU GOVERNMENT FAILS TO DELIVER ON NYSC ALLOWANCE INCREASE
.
The Nigerian government’s promise to increase the monthly allowance for National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) members has turned out to be a hollow one. Despite assurances from the NYSC Director-General, Brigadier General Yushau Ahmed, corps members are still receiving the old allowance of N33,000, a far cry from the promised N77,000.
A WAIT THAT SEEMS ENDLESS
.
In January, Ahmed had told corps members in Katsina State that the allowance increment was a done deal, awaiting only the passage of the 2025 budget. But February has come and gone, and the promise remains unfulfilled. Corps members are growing restless, wondering when they will receive the increased allowance they were promised.
A GOVERNMENT’S COMMITMENT QUESTIONED
.
The delay in implementing the allowance increase has raised questions about the government’s commitment to supporting young Nigerians. Corps members are struggling to make ends meet, and the current allowance is no longer sufficient to cover their basic needs. Will the government fulfill its promise, or will corps members continue to wait in vain?
