Nigeria’s National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control (NAFDAC) has taken bold action against Aveo Pharmaceuticals, an Indian company accused of manufacturing and distributing deadly opioids in Nigeria, Ghana, and Côte d’Ivoire.

THE DEADLY DRUG COCKTAIL

The agency’s investigation revealed that Aveo Pharmaceuticals, managed by Vinod Sharma, produced drugs containing a harmful mix of tapentadol, a powerful opioid, and carisoprodol, a banned muscle relaxant. These substances pose severe health risks, including respiratory failure, seizures, overdose, and death.

A BBC World Service investigation exposed the extent of Aveo’s illicit activities, with undercover footage capturing Vinod Sharma admitting to the mass distribution of these opioids for abuse as street drugs across West Africa.
