Tesla is recalling certain 2023 Model 3 and Model Y vehicles due to a critical power steering issue, as reported by the U.S. National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA). The affected cars are running software versions earlier than 2023.38.4.

POWER STEERING GLITCH POSES SAFETY RISK
The NHTSA discovered that a flaw in the electronic power steering system could cause the printed circuit board to become overstressed. This may result in a sudden loss of power steering assistance, particularly when the vehicle stops and then accelerates again.

Losing power steering at low speeds could make maneuvering difficult, increasing the risk of accidents. However, Tesla has reassured customers that there have been no reported crashes, injuries, or fatalities tied to this issue.

TESLA ROLLS OUT REMOTE SOFTWARE FIX
To address the problem, Tesla has released a free over-the-air software update for affected vehicles. Additionally, the company will notify impacted owners officially starting March 25.

TESLA UNDER INCREASED SAFETY SCRUTINY
This recall comes as Tesla faces multiple safety investigations by the NHTSA. In 2023, the agency launched a probe into over 280,000 Tesla vehicles due to reported steering issues.

In 2024, the NHTSA expanded its investigation to 2.6 million Tesla vehicles after several crashes were linked to the company’s self-driving technology. Most recently, in January, authorities opened a new inquiry into Tesla’s “Actually Smart Summon” feature, which allows drivers to summon their parked vehicles using a mobile app.
