DEMAND FOR JUSTICE: NNAMDI KANU SEEKS CASE TRANSFER
.
In a bold move, Nnamdi Kanu, the embattled leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), has petitioned the Chief Judge of the Federal High Court to relocate his case to a more neutral jurisdiction. This unprecedented request comes on the heels of Justice Binta Murtala-Nyako’s recusal from the case, a decision that has sparked controversy and raised eyebrows.
.
AVOIDING A CONFLICT OF INTEREST
Kanu’s legal team, led by Special Counsel Aloy Ejimakor, has expressed concerns that Justice Murtala-Nyako’s continued involvement in the case would be a gross miscarriage of justice. Ejimakor emphasized that the judge’s recusal was a clear indication that she had acknowledged the potential for bias. “It would be a travesty of justice if the same judge who withdrew from the case due to a conflict of interest were to preside over it again,” Ejimakor asserted.
.
A CALL FOR REGIONAL JUSTICE
In a bid to ensure a fair trial, Kanu has requested that his case be transferred to a Federal High Court in the South-East or South-South region of Nigeria. This strategic move is aimed at avoiding any perceived bias and ensuring that justice is served in a more impartial environment. As Ejimakor aptly put it, “If no other judge in Abuja is willing to handle the case, the Chief Judge should consider transferring it to a more suitable location.”
