TIKTOK FACES UNCERTAIN FUTURE IN THE US

The popular social media platform TikTok is on the brink of a shutdown in the United States, with the deadline for its Chinese owner ByteDance to divest ownership or cease operations fast approaching. US President Joe Biden signed the Protecting Americans from Foreign Adversary Controlled Applications Act (PAFACA) into law in April, prompting the ultimatum.

REPRIEVE ON THE HORIZON?

As the ban draws near, US officials have hinted that a reprieve might be in the works for the app, which boasts 170 million American users. A legal challenge is also pending before the Supreme Court, with TikTok contesting the ban on the grounds that it infringes upon freedom of expression.

CONSEQUENCES OF A BAN

If the ban takes effect, TikTok will be removed from US app stores, and domestic tech companies will be prohibited from hosting, distributing, or updating the app. Existing users will eventually find the app unusable due to the lack of updates. Users attempting to access TikTok will be redirected to a website explaining the ban and providing instructions on downloading their personal data.

LAST-MINUTE EFFORTS TO SAVE TIKTOK

Officials from both the Biden administration and the incoming Trump administration have indicated that they are working to find a solution to keep the app operational. Trump’s incoming national security adviser, Mike Waltz, stated that the new administration would “find a way to preserve [TikTok] while protecting people’s data.” TikTok CEO Shou Chew is scheduled to attend Trump’s inauguration, potentially signaling a positive development for the app’s future.

UNDERLYING CONCERNS

The ban is part of a broader effort to address concerns about TikTok’s ties to the Chinese government and potential national security risks. Although TikTok’s owner, ByteDance, is a private company, the Chinese government wields significant influence over the country’s tech industry.
