POLICE INSPECTOR-GENERAL FACES N300 MILLION LAWSUIT BY SPEED DARLINGTON

The Federal High Court in Abuja has postponed the ₦300 million fundamental human rights enforcement suit filed by singer# Speed Darlington against the Inspector-General of Police, Kayode Egbetokun, to January 27 for hearing. This decision was made after the counsel for the IGP, CSP Audu Garba, requested more time to examine a further affidavit submitted by Speed Darlington’s attorney, Abubakar Marshal.

Speed Darlington’s lawsuit arises from his alleged unlawful imprisonment by the police. He was apprehended in Lagos on allegations of slander and online harassment related to his remarks about musician Burna Boy. Despite being granted bail on October 8, 2024, Darlington claims he was subjected to torment and cruel treatment during his imprisonment.

The court had previously ordered the police to release Darlington immediately, pending the hearing of the substantive matter. However, the police claim he breached his bail conditions during the Christmas holiday.

Speed Darlington’s suit seeks compensation for the unlawful imprisonment and requests an order for his immediate release or production before the court. With the postponement to January 27, we’ll have to wait and see how this case unfolds.
