POULTRY ASSOCIATION OF NIGERIA WARNS OF IMMINENT EGG PRICE HIKE

The Poultry Association of Nigeria (PAN) is sounding the alarm – if the government doesn’t step in to support poultry farmers, egg prices might skyrocket from N5,500 to N10,000 per crate! The main culprits behind this potential price hike are the high cost of transportation, thanks to the fuel subsidy removal, and the escalating prices of poultry feed.

According to Musa Hakeem, Secretary of PAN’s FCT Chapter, the situation is dire. He’s calling on the Federal Government to declare a state of emergency on egg production, citing the severe decline in protein intake and the country’s inability to rely on imported eggs.

Here are some key factors contributing to the crisis:

RISING COST OF TRANSPORTATION Fuel subsidy removal has led to increased transportation costs, affecting the entire poultry industry.

POULTRY FEED PRICES
Indiscriminate price hikes by feed millers are crippling poultry farmers.

LACK OF GOVERNMENT SUPPORT The last grain intervention from the government was three years ago, leaving farmers without a safety net.

Hakeem warns that if the prices of poultry feed continue to rise, egg prices might jump to N6,000 soon. This is devastating news for Nigerians, who already struggle to afford basic necessities.

The PAN has been vocal about the industry’s challenges, including the high cost of raw materials, cash scarcity, and insecurity. With the current state of affairs, it’s unclear how poultry farmers will sustain their businesses without urgent government intervention.
