INTENSIFIES

The NIHSA has strongly advised state and local authorities to take urgent preventive steps to minimize the effects of the anticipated flooding.

“Rising water levels are signaling a serious flood threat that could impact states bordering the River Benue.”

The agency further assured that it will keep Nigerians informed about the expected flooding, stressing the importance of acting before the situation worsens.

The statement noted, “On Thursday, September 19, 2024, water levels at key monitoring points in the Benue Basin have been steadily rising, though still within normal limits.”

“By Friday, September 20, water levels at critical stations along the River Benue had reached flood conditions.”

Citizens were encouraged to clear blocked canals, drains, and gutters.

On Saturday, September 21, 2024, water levels at major points along the River Benue continued to rise, nearing flood stages.

“The 12 states at risk of flooding are strongly advised to take measures to either control or channel the water safely.”
