According to police and university authorities on Saturday, the medical students were kidnapped in Benue State on Thursday night while en route to an annual convention.

The students were being transported to the conference in the city of Enugu when they were abducted, according to a statement from the Federation of Catholic Medical and Dental Students.

The Nigerian Medical Students’ Association secretary-general, Fortune Olaye, reported that 20 medical students from two universities and a doctor who was travelling with them had been abducted.

It also stated that their freedom had been demanded in exchange for a ransom.

Twelve of the kidnapped students were from the University of Jos, and eight were from the University of Maiduguri, according to a letter written by NMA secretary-general Benjamin Egbo to the inspector general of police that was on social media.

The letter stated that one of the students was able to provide their whereabouts, which showed that they were in the Benue State region of Oglewu Ehaje.
