TINUBU ASKS NIGERIANS TO HALT THE UPCOMING PROTEST AS THE GOVERNMENT IS WORKING ON THEIR PLEAS
Following a meeting with the President on Tuesday, Information Minister Mohammed Idris briefed a few State House media, stating that Tinubu had advised the protest organisers to put the plan on hold and wait for the President to address their concerns.
“The President believes there is no need for the scheduled protest, to address that matter
He has urged them to put that idea on hold. The minister stated, “He’s asked them to wait for the government’s response to all their pleas.”
All of the Federation’s states as well as the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Abuja, are expected to participate in the protest against economic hardship that is gaining popularity on social media in August. The protest’s organisers have chosen to remain anonymous.
Food and basic commodity prices have skyrocketed in recent months as Nigerians struggle with one of the biggest inflation and economic crises the nation has ever experienced, which was brought on by the government’s dual policies of eliminating petrol subsidies and unifying exchange windows.
The National Orientation Agency (NOA), the Nigeria Police Force, and the House of Representatives have issued warnings against the scheduled demonstration on behalf of the Federal Government.
The President has been called to respond to the requests of the disgruntled individuals, the majority of whom are young people, by the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) and Senator Ali Ndume, who is facing hardships.
Presidential spokesman Bayo Onanuga issued a warning on Saturday, stating that if the planned demonstration is carried out, it may turn into an asset destruction campaign similar to the EndSARS demonstration against extrajudicial murders and police brutality that took place in October 2020.
