NIGERIAN GOVERNMENT SPENT N721 BILLION ON BRIBERY IN 2023-2024 -UNITED NATIONS
The NBS reports that in 2023, bribes paid nationwide totaled N721 billion, or almost 0.35 percent of the GDP of the nation.
The report emphasised that public office holders got an average of N8,284 in cash in 2023, an increase from an average of N5,754 in 2019. The report was based on a survey done with the United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime.
A portion of the study stated, “The average monetary bribe paid was 8,284 Nigerian Naira, according the 2023 survey. “The nominal average cash bribe amount has grown from NGN 5,754 in 2019; however, this does not take inflation into consideration.
What might have been purchased with the average cash bribe in 2023 (adjusted for inflation) was 29% less than it was in 2019.
According to estimates, bribes in cash totaling around NGN 721 billion (US$1.26 billion) were paid to public officials in Nigeria in 2023; this amounts to 0.35 percent of the country’s GDP.
