Uk’S LABOUR PARTY VICTORY SIGNALS WIN FOR NIGERIA’S COUNTERPART IN 2027 PRESIDENTIAL ELECTION (HON.AFAM OGENE)
The Labour Party Caucus Leader in the House of Representatives, Hon. Afam Ogene, has praised the UK election process for producing a Labour Party victory against the reigning Conservative Party.
The opposition party’s triumph, according to Ogene, who represents the Ogbaru Federal Constituency, could spur the Labour Party of Nigeria to action in the country’s general elections of 2027.
The legislator claimed that the election “tells vivid tales of hope for the opposition, competence and integrity of the electoral umpires in the UK” in a statement released in Awka on Friday.
After 14 years in power, the Conservative Party was defeated by the opposition Labour Party in the UK general election, which resulted in a sizable parliamentary majority. The Conservatives held 121 seats, while the Labour Party received 412.
Ogene thanked British Labour Party leader and new prime minister Keir Starmer on his party’s victory over Rishi Sunak.
According to Ogene, the triumph signified not only for the opposition party in Britain but also for all those who respect democracy, openness, and honesty.
About 40 million people cast ballots in the UK, and the results were announced by dawn on Thursday after the polls closed at 10 p.m. “To the admiration of all lovers of democracy and free and fair elections, an immediate transition took place; there was no judicial ambush,” the speaker declared.
“If democracy is something we have to practise, then we also have to respect, emulate, and uphold the accountability and openness of democratic institutions in countries where the rule of law and democratic values are flourishing.
“The triumph of the British Labour Party gives rise to hope and optimism, proving that constructive change can occur when people work together towards a common goal.
He stated, “I implore the Nigerian Labour Party to learn from our British counterparts, unite the populace, and get ready to seize power in 2027.”
