NIGERIAN GOVERNORS GUARANTEE LABOUR A BETTER MINIMUM WAGE
The governors provided the guarantee following a meeting on Wednesday in Abuja.
A statement from the Governors Forum stated, in part, that “the governors agreed to continue engaging with key stakeholders to reach a mutually agreeable solution.” “We are committed to the process and guarantee that the ongoing negotiations will lead to better wages.”
AbdulRahman Abdul Rasaq, the governor of Kwara State and Chairman of the NGF, signed the communiqué.
The governors also discussed current fiscal policy and tax reforms, among other matters impacting the nation.
The Federal Executive Council (FEC) withdrew its review memo on the minimum wage the day
before the governors’ meeting
to allow for additional
consultations.
President Bola Tinubu promised Organised Labour at his Democracy Day speech on June 12, 2024, that an executive law establishing a new national minimum wage for workers will be brought to the National Assembly for approval shortly.
The ₦62,000 government and business sector proposal and the ₦250,000 demand from Labour are expected to be
decided upon by the President.
