EGG PRICE SOARS IN NIGERIA
As opposed to N3,200 to N3,500 in May, a crate of eggs currently sells for between N3,800 and N4,000 at the farm gate and for more over N4,500 in retail stores and marketplaces.
Iyiola claimed that even with the increase, farmers would not be able to recoup their investment.
In actuality, the majority of farmers are losing money. Farmers are barely making even, even at N5,000 for a crate of eggs.
“Our farmers are saying that they can no longer afford to sell at a loss, therefore we want to get in touch with the food hub at Idi-Oro. “We supply eggs at the farm gate for N3,800 per crate, and with the same logistics costs, we still sell at N3,800 at the hub, which means we are incurring losses,”
He issued a warning that the industry would completely collapse if the current circumstances are left unchecked. “We now sell a crate of eggs from the farm gate for between N3,800 and N4,000 due to the increase in poultry feed prices.
They are being sold by retailers for N4,500 and more.”Because feed prices rise virtually every week, the
pricing is still erratic.
