According to the BBC on Tuesday, Teesside University in the United Kingdom has launched a new programme to assist Nigerian students who are experiencing extreme financial hardships by paying for their return flights. This action was taken in response to many students who were expelled from their classes and given orders to depart the UK because they were unable to pay their tuition.
Many students in Nigeria were unable to pay for their education due to the financial crisis, which was made worse by the university’s decision to switch from a seven- to a three-installment payment plan.
According to a local food charity, students from Nigeria now make up 75% of its
clientele, indicating the severity of their financial difficulties.
May 22, 2024: A group of students from Nigeria, due to their inability to pay tuition on time at Teesside University were compelled to leave the United Kingdom and ejected from their degrees.
The students stated that they were unable to fulfil their financial obligations due to the devaluation of the naira, which resulted in a violation of their visa sponsorship criteria.
A number of students had account lockouts, were notified by the Home Office, and were required to depart the United Kingdom.
The institution maintained that these steps were necessary because of stringent external regulations.
The sixty impacted students voiced extreme anguish and dissatisfaction and charged the university with being “heartless” and unsupportive.
