The history of St Philip’s Anglican Church Okofia:
Around 1898,the Gospel came “Okwu mgbodo” Ezekwuabor Otolo through a female white missoiner popularly called ” Ogana” and her group. The early converts from Ezekwuabor Mbanagu,Okpuno,Ezeogwugwu,ndimgbu and Okofia gathered there for fellowship. The missioner later went back until 1904 when they returned to Nnewi and planted a Church at “Eke Eze” Okpuneze Uruagu which later established at present day St Mary’s Cathedral Uruagu Nnewi while a school was established at Ekeze Uruagu Nnewi.
It was in 1913 that a small piece of land freely donated by Ezeugboghalu, father of Hezekiah Okeke ,one of the early Christians. I that piece of land, a hut a hot church building was built it was in the same 1913, the name -St Philip’s Anglican Church was given to the church.The first church helper was Mr Gabriel Mbaebie was coming from St Thomas Church. His tenure lasted from 1913 to 1923 until a full fledged Church teacher with Standard six certificate by name Mr Ishmael Akpunonu from Umuanuka was posted as resident teacher.
In 1930, the mud church building was was demolished and another thatched mud house bigger than the first one was built. This was during the time Mr Benson Aduaka from Ogidi,who was a church teacher then.In the same period, the church teacher, Mr Benson Aduka received the first bell which was donated by the mother church St Thomas Church Otolo. The membership of the church was increased. In 1954, the mud church building was demolished and the new church building was built with cement and roofed zinc.It was completed and dedicated by Rt Revd LM Uzodike, Bishop on the Niger in 1970.
