The history of St. Matthew’s Church dates back to the influence of the Church Missionary Society (CMS), which extended its evangelical activities to the Amakom community. In 1934, church services began and were initially held in the palace of the Obi of Amakom, Chief Ucheagbala Dunudiegwu.

In 1938, the first church worker, Mr. John Emefo from Alor, was sent to serve the growing congregation. By 1939, many members had migrated to urban areas in search of greener pastures. This prompted a request by the late Pa. Michael Ndukwe for the church to be relocated to a more central and accessible site for worshippers.

The first catechist, Mr. J.C. Agogbua, along with devoted members such as Mr. Benjamin D. Muojekwu and even the cooperation of local non-Christians, helped erect the first church building.

In 1978, a new church structure was built under the supervision of Mr. Lawrence Ibegbunam from Ogidi. The foundation of the current building was formally laid in 1993 by His Lordship, Rt. Revd. Dr. J.A. Onyemelukwe, then Bishop on the Niger.

Over the years, numerous members have contributed significantly to the church’s growth and wellbeing, including individuals like Ositadimma Amaechi, Dr. Chukwujama, Barr. Ifeanyi Ejiofor, among others.

Today, St. Matthew’s Church remains vibrant and active, supported by various organizations such as ACM, EFAC, AYF, and the Women’s Ministry. The church has also expanded its reach, giving birth to a new congregation — Abundant Joy Anglican Church, Oraifite, in Ekwusigo Local Government Area.
