BRIEF HISTORY OF CHRIST ANG.CHURCH NGOMKPU, OKOFIA OTOLO NNEWI.

Christ Church Ngomkpu is situated at Ngomkpu, a hilly land with inter visible scenery from where several other communities like Utuh, Ukpor, Umudim can conveniently be seen.
It is a place used in olden days by town criers to alert Otolo people of any approaching invaders during the warring expansion era of communities.

In 1940’s, Okofia and Amiliba Christian Communities formed ecumenism and were meeting at Chief DC Okoli premises every Uka Nkwo which they tagged, “Nzuko Uka Nkwo of Okofia/Amiliba Christian Society”.

In 1956, the Late Revd. Canon J.C Nwankwo then Superintendent of Nnewi District, who had earlier named the place Christ Church to allow Evensong to be held for
Okofia and Amiliba children and the aged came for Pastoral visit. Christ Church premises served Okofia and Amiliba and the College community upon the establishment of Teachers Training College at Ngomkpu.
To this effect, a letter of appeal was sent by Victor Ifebi to the then Bishop on the Niger. Rt. Revd. J.A Onyemelukwe who asked the late very Revd. I.C Agbaim to come and see what to do. The then Otolo District consequently ordered St Philip’s to demarcate the Church land from the rest with a wall immediately after which Otolo District built a twin bungalow for prospective resident Church workers.
In 1997, the then Superintendent of St Philip’s District, Revd. S.O.C Onuigbo (now Ven) announced that Christ Church has attained full Church status, thus allowing her to stand on her own and have both Mattins and Evensongs as well as other activities like any other Church.

The building of the present Church commenced in 1999 during the time of Mr Ibezim Okoye (now Ven.). Since then, work on the Church project is mainly done by donations from individuals and groups.
Between 2004 to 2006, the Church building which was at its first lintel level was completed and roofed within eighteen (18) months. The roofing of the Church building (Iron roofing) was done by Chief Ben Moore Okoli (Igiligi Anaedo) at the cost of Four million, one hundred and fifty thousand naira (#4.150M). Other major donors at that time was
Barr Sir Chijioke Okoli SAN, Sir Chris Ifebi, Dr
Ernest Ifebi, etc.
In 2006 the first resident priest Revd. Henry N Nduka (now Ven) was posted to Christ Church by the Diocesan, The Rt. Revd. Dr. GIN Okpala (JP). In the same year precisely 22nd July, the foundation stone laying ceremony of the church building was performed by the Bishop. These obvious signs of growth and maturity culminated into the granting of
Parish status by the Diocesan board and subsequent inauguration of Christ Church parish by the bishop the Rt. Revd Prof.GIN Okpala (Jp) on 26th July 2008.

The inside of the Church building was roughly painted in 2017 by Barr Sir Chijioke Okoli SAN, who also tilled the Church floor, while the outside tilling of the Church was done by Mama Felicia Okoli. Sir Chris Ifebi paid for both the lectern, the Chancel table and another reading desk. The Family of Mr and Mrs Godffery Agba through Mr Emmanuel donated most of the sound system and musical equipment.
Moreover, the painting of the Church started in earnest on 11th of May, 2020 sponsored by Mr.Onyedika Agba. This opened doors for more donations toward completion of the Church Building project and the move for the dedication of the Church after several past attempts. The news of the dedication of the Church stimulated great joy and motivated members to donate towards the completion of the remaining work as well as items needed for the dedication of the Church. The major donors include: Dr.Sir Ernest & Lady Ngozi Ifebi; Mr. & Mrs Nnaedochie Okoli; Mr. Charles Agwuncha; Mr. Onyeka Okonkwo; Mr & Mrs Arinze Okoli; Mr & Mrs Peter Onyeanusi; Evang.Sir & Lady Chris Ifebi; Mama Felicia Okoli,
Engr Nnamdi Okoli. The completed new Church building was dedicated on Saturday 5th December, 2020 by Rt.Revd Ndubuisi Chukwuka Obi.

In 2021, Revd. Ikenna Udoye created three zones which are; Ascension Zone(Obiakwu area), Pentecost Zone(Obiuno area) and Christ Church Zone (non Okofia indegenes). These zones participate actively in disseminating information, healthy harvest competition and as well in grass root evangelism and visitations.

The Women Ministry is very active and supportive to the Church. Lay reader Felicia Okoli and Lady Ngozi Ifebi were the pioneer home and abroad leaders. They contributed much in the development and the building of the Church as well as in refurbishing the women’s office. Mrs Hope Ekechukwu took over from Lady Ngozi Ifebi as the chairperson of the women’s Home & Abroad meeting. In 2022, the women ministry of the Church under the leadership of Mrs Adaobi Udoye donated three in one Laptop, scanner and photocopy machine to the Church. They also equipped the Church School: Christ the Rock Foundation Schools playing ground.

In 2022, Diocesan Church planting committee planted two Churches at Ngoabo and Amiliba areas and two Missioners were posted to these Churches respectively. The Ngoabo Church was later transferred to St. Philips Parish Okofia and consequently named Overflowing Grace Church by Diocesan on 20th October, 2023 while Amiliba Church under Christ Church Parish was at the same time named, Amazing love Anglican Church Amiliba.
