The Department of Psychology at the University of Nigeria, Nsukka (UNN) occupies a foundational place in the history of higher education in Nigeria. As the pioneer institution for psychological study in the country, it has trained generations of behavioral scientists, clinical practitioners, corporate consultants, and academics.
1. Historical Evolution & Philosophical Foundation
Established in 1964, under the guidance of Professor Carl Frost of Michigan State University (USA), the Department of Psychology at UNN was the very first degree-awarding department of psychology in Nigeria. It broke new ground in sub-Saharan Africa, producing its inaugural set of graduates in 1967 under its first Head of Department, Mr. J. Anowi.
Core Philosophy
The academic framework at UNN is built on the empirical, scientific study of human and animal behavior. Rather than viewing behavior through a isolated lens, the curriculum synthesizes three core vectors:
Biological: Brain function, genetics, neurotransmission, and psychopharmacology.
Psychological: Cognitive processing, emotional regulation, and personality development.
Socio-Cultural: The distinct impact of the Nigerian and broader African social environment on individual and group behavior.
2. Leadership: Prof. John E. Eze
The department operates under the leadership of its current Head of Department, Professor John E. Eze.
> Profile Focus: Professor John E. Eze
> Background: Born on August 15, 1967, in Ebonyi State, Nigeria.
> Specialization: Full Professor of Clinical Psychology.
> Research Frontiers: Clinical Psychopathology, Abnormal Psychology, trauma studies (such as PTSD among internally displaced persons), and systemic mental health interventions in Sub-Saharan Africa.
> Professional Footprint: Beyond his administrative role at UNN, Prof. Eze is a key figure in national professional bodies. He has served as the National Treasurer of the Nigerian Psychological Association (NPA), National Assistant Secretary of the Nigeria Association of Clinical Psychologists (NACP), and holds editorial responsibilities as the Assistant Editor-in-Chief of the Nigerian Journal of Clinical Psychology.
3. Academic Programs & Specialization Areas
The department runs comprehensive undergraduate and postgraduate paths designed to balance deep theoretical knowledge with rigorous field application (praxis).
Degree Programs Offered
Bachelor of Science (B.Sc. Hons) in Psychology: A 4-year full-time program providing a holistic foundation across all core branches of behavioral science.
Postgraduate Diploma (PGD) in Psychology:A bridge program (full-time or part-time) designed for graduates of other disciplines wishing to pivot into professional psychology.
Master of Science (M.Sc.): Advanced specialized coursework and empirical research thesis.
Doctor of Philosophy (Ph.D.): Terminal research degree focused on generating novel psychological paradigms and local interventions.
Key Stress Areas & Sub-Disciplines
The department structures its curriculum and staff research across several prominent core areas:
Clinical & Abnormal Psychology: Focuses on the diagnostics, therapeutic frameworks, and psychopathology affecting mental health.
Industrial/Organizational (I/O) Psychology: Centers on human performance, workplace dynamics, leadership, and union-management relationships.
Social & Environmental Psychology: Examines interpersonal relationships, the psychology of social change, and the interactions between humans and their physical environments.
Experimental & Quantitative Psychology: The methodological engine room, teaching advanced statistical modeling, psychometrics, and experimental designs.
Forensic & Developmental Psychology: Covers the psychological intersections with law enforcement/justice systems, alongside life-span human development.
4. Learning Infrastructure & Professional Impact

Clinical and Industrial Practicums: Students undergo mandatory observational placements in clinical settings, psychiatric hospitals, and industrial organizations to understand real-world application.
Psychometric Lab & Testing: Training in administration, scoring, and cultural adaptation of standardized psychological evaluation tools.
